Posted on Mar 10, 2012 (Last edited on Mar 10, 2012) Using the natural gas cycle, the stoichiometry is:250EL <- $17.50 + 5NG 5NG <- $0.75 + 20EL + 20WA 20WA <- $1 + 2EL So 228 electricity costs $19.25 for $0.08443 per unit. Using coal we get: 500EL <- $35 + 1CO 1CO <- $5.60 + 10EL + 10WA 10WA <- $0.50 + 1EL So 489 electricity costs $41.10 for $0.08404 per unit. Going to the least common multiple, 32,604 units of electricity costs $3137.75 using natural gas or $3123.60 using coal. That's a difference of $14.15, or a penny every 23 units, or less than half a percent. If you have a mine, you'll probably want to use coal to make your electricity. I don't, and I'm not going to build one just to cut a few hundred bucks off my daily power bill. Edit: If the cash input of natural gas were 13.2 cents instead of 15, the prices would be virtually identical. Or if the cash input of coal were $5.78. |
